In today’s aged care environments, flexibility is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. As care models evolve and activity programming diversifies, the ability to reconfigure spaces quickly and effectively has become a cornerstone of responsive design. One solution leading this transformation is the operable acoustic wall, which blends functional versatility with acoustic performance and refined aesthetics.
Operable walls, especially those designed for acoustic control, are increasingly used in aged care settings for two primary reasons. First, they offer space adaptability for administrators, enabling large communal areas to be partitioned into smaller, purpose-specific zones such as meeting rooms, quiet lounges, or breakout spaces for training and leisure activities. Second, they provide treatment room flexibility in clinical environments. Rooms can be resized in response to staff availability and the nature of care being delivered, allowing optimal use of space without compromising comfort or privacy. Beyond their practical benefits, these systems are available in a range of finishes and acoustic ratings to suit diverse interior design and acoustic requirements.
Acoustic design plays a critical role in supporting resident wellbeing. Older adults are particularly sensitive to sound due to age-related hearing loss, cognitive decline, and heightened sensory vulnerabilities. Poor acoustic environments can exacerbate stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and behavioural issues, especially for individuals living with dementia. Operable acoustic walls help mitigate these risks by minimizing noise transmission between rooms, corridors, and communal areas, preserving privacy and dignity, and improving overall safety and communication. When paired with sensory-friendly design, visual connections to nature, and calming material palettes, these walls contribute to environments that feel homelike, supportive, and emotionally reassuring.
Project Spotlights
Bolton Clarke Willowdale, Denham Court NSW
Located in a vibrant retirement precinct, this 144-room community blends dementia-friendly principles, landscaped gardens, and integrated retail spaces. Bildspec operable walls were installed in communal areas, enabling seamless reconfiguration while maintaining acoustic integrity and visual appeal through Woven Image Mura finishes. Delivered by Lipman, this project exemplifies how thoughtful acoustic design can elevate resident experience.
Canobolis Clinic, Bloomfield Hospital NSW
In this long-stay mental health rehabilitation unit for older adults, Bildspec Series 100 movable walls were integrated into treatment spaces. These support spatial division based on care needs and staff availability, while enhancing comfort through effective sound control—an essential feature in clinical care environments.
