Solar Glare Assessments help to prevent dangers to traffic. International and indeed Australian guidelines detailing calculation methods and limits for solar glare are vague with a few exceptions.
Different methodologies exist to evaluate the impact of solar glare. Some focus on the intensity of the reflection, while others evaluate duration, size of viewing angles and other parameters.
For traffic situations (road traffic, aviation and railroad traffic), the recognition of obstacles, such as pedestrians, other cars or other planes and visual signals (road signs, traffic lights, break lights) is important.
When the angle between a reflecting surface and the line of sight towards the reflector is small, the reflections will appear near to the sun. The intensity of the sun typically is several orders of magnitude stronger than the reflections it obscures the reflections, i.e. they do not appear strong in comparison – an effect that often called masking.
Material Reflectivity is the determining factor when calculating the intensity of a glare.
Australia:
In its guideline, the Civil Aviation Authority of Australia restricts the use of floodlights in order to avoid blinding pilots on airports. In Queensland, the facades of buildings and structures shall not reflect point light sources into the face of oncoming traffic on a state‐controlled road, and a draft guidance for local governments has been issued that suggests evaluation methods with respect to solar glare.
As the number one preferred supplier of solar blinds for air traffic and maritime control towers, Reflective Blinds® has decades of industry experience. They have been designing and installing blinds in control towers for over thirty years and are involved in the design of many new projects. In addition, Reflective Blinds® have supplied blinds for control towers nationally and internationally and are experts in refurbishment.
Tower blinds can be operated manually with rewinds to take up excess cord in line with OH&S requirements or are available in a fully motorised option.
